EDUCATION TO FIGHT POVERTY
Don Bosco Children Fund offers scholarships to young people as an immediate solution to their poverty.
Don Bosco Children Fund’s objective is to provide needy and deserving children the means to go to school and have sufficient resources such as food and clothes
Parents or guardians receive support in order to send the children to school.
The support is granted to children attending kindergarten, primary and secondary education. The support is extended for a professional skill course, for the one who wish, in order to introduce young people in the society with a skill as a mean to self-support his/her living with a job. The age for the children can be between
2-5 kindergarten,
6-15 primary (grade 1-6) and secondary (grade 7-9) education,
16-19 skill training (two years course) or secondary (grade 10-12) high education.
Children selection criteria for Don Bosco Children Fund scholarship program.
- Children from poor families who’ s parents cannot afford sending their children to school. Screening by home-visit.
- Parents are willing to cooperate in sending their children to school regularly.
- Children are attending their classes regularly with satisfactory marks.
- Priority to needy children living near Don Bosco Children Fund branches and children attending Don Bosco schools (Don Bosco Phnom Penh, Sihanoukville, Battambang, Poipet and Kep).
IMPLEMENTATION
Don Bosco Children Fund in Cambodia has 5 branches:
Phnom Penh, Sihanoukville, Battambang. Poipet and Kep.
Each branch follows up a group of children in the area.
Follow up is done by teachers/volunteers of the schools the children are attending. Teachers and volunteers receive an allowance or a salary for their service as well as phone card for easy communication.
DBCF is gathering once a month with the Children to make sure they are in good health while attending their classes and doing well and give advice when necessary.
Some special cases will be addressed by home visit or meeting the parents.
There is no cash handling. Any support to the children is sent by transferring money to the parent’s phone number (WING OR TRUE MONEY services available in Cambodia).
The scholarship is 10-14 $/month according to the school level. Transfer to parents is done in quarterly basis.
Parents can see the best way to use the scholarship they receive at the condition they provide what their children need for education and hygiene. Random improvised home visit can verify such condition is implemented.
At Christmas or in particular feasts, we organize a gathering and children receive a present.
In particular cases, like sickness or accidents of a family member, we offer the most appropriate assistance.
